FIRST NATIONAL BANK IN THE : GRASP OF THE FIRE FIEND. Caught at 4:30 O'clock "This Morn Inie Origin Unknown--Heavy Loss but Nearly Covered by Insurance. ; By telegi aph to The Dav. Durham, N. C, Oct. 23. The First National Bank building of this city caught afire at 4:30 o'clock this morning. It is not known how it originated. The fire started on the second or third floor,and was confined to these floors by the splendid work of the fire department. ( , . The third floor was occupied by the Knights of Pythias and Masonic orders, and most of their furniture and para phernalia were destroyed, but were covered by insurance. W. H. Proctor, grocer, on first floor, had his stock-badly damaged by water. His loss is about $ij,ooo; partially insured. . - ; The furniture of the Bank waswreck- edbut , money, papers etc., are O. K. ;. . ' A number of gentlemen slept in apartments on the second floor. All got out safely. 'The building was owned by J. S. Cut, and is supposed to be fully in sured. v, The members of the Durham Fire Department worked like beavers, and but for them half of the business por tion' of the town would now be in ashes. A Trunk Line From Norfolk via Ral eigh to Cincinnati. The Wi nston correspondent of the Raleigh State Chronicle writes : It was stated on the best authority today: that the Richmond Terminal Company will secure a through trunk line t from Norfolk via Raleigh' and Bristol to Cincinnati. The line will start from Norfolk over the road already built to Tarboro and extended to Stanhope, Nash county. From thence it will go to Raleigh where it connects with the regular Richmond and Danville line to Wilkes boro: From Wilkesboro the road is in course of construction to Brist61,Tenn. , where it will connect with the South Atlantic and Ohio road, which is be ing pushed forward ; to Cincinnati. The Richmond Terminal jointly owns the road already built from Norfolk to Stanhope, Na?h County, with the At lantic Coast Line. , From the latter place, the Richmond and Danville , Company will build 30 miles to Raleigh to connect with this line to Wilkesboro. The latter place and Bristol being connected, they will only need connection between Bristol and Cincinnati, and will get that by an extension of the South Atlantic and Ohio, which is owned by the Rich mond Terminal. ' A Florence, Ala., special says: Much excitement prevails over, the discovery of natural gas seven miles from this ci ty by H. O. Weller and others. It has been known for months past that jjas existed in this section and several surveys have been made for this purpose. . One company has been at work for months getting up options of land in this neighborhood.. Prom inent geologist experts have relied forcibly on indications for finding gas which has at last been accmplished. Patrick J. Gleason, Mayor of Long Island City, who was convicted a few days ago of assault in the third degree upon George R. Browley, reporter of Assoc:ated Press, was ariainged before Judge Cullen in Long, Island City for sentence. The Judge sentenced the Mayor to five bs' imprisonment and to pay a fine of $250. Stay was re fused, and Sheriff Goldner conducted the Mayor to his private a j?rtments on the first floor of the jajl, and he will not be locked up at all.; He will be merely kept in rrominal custody.
